Trauma: Life in the Gym

Stairway to….hell (th)

It was funny today-the weather was nice and I decided that I would enjoy the walk to my class since I got to school earlier. Funny how the first week of classes always has ZILLIONS of cars lined up anywhere and everywhere to get in to parking-and today, it was almost empty. I took a nice walk and got to class and everything went well. The 3 hours are long but I got through it with my hot pink thermos full of real green tea!! During break time, I had to go up to the 11th floor to pick up a project that was waiting for me. I decided to be all healthy and take the stairs up….keep in mind that one floor of steps going UP is about 15 steps or so…so I went up on flight-jogged up the next, and the next.

Then I looked at the door and saw that it said…SIXTH floor. Not a big deal right? Well to my legs and lungs it was. Suddenly my breathing was heavy and it felt like I ran a marathon. I decided to take it nice and slow up the next flight. Seven, eight…I have to say that once I made the realization that I had to STILL go up to the 11th floor, I could barely breathe. No joke. I was out of breath, my heart was pumping fast and my thighs started to burn. I literally had to stop and catch my breath which was long left on the 5th floor. I dreaded going up the rest of the steps but I had to.

I was so shocked at how much I felt like I wanted to pass out right there. I mean it was ONLY 5 flights of stairs with 3 more to go, but it was TORTURE!!! I dragged my sorry ass up the rest of those stairs and had to wait at the top a few minutes to catch my breath. I couldn’t believe it-I felt the same way I used to after having 12 minute runs in highschool-the thing is, I am much older now and obviously more out of shape.

It was quite an eye opener and I don’t think I will be taking the 8 flights of stairs anymore though-it was a bad lesson and reminder that I have zero endurance and really need to start working out. I guess my excuse is that my back has been a mess-chiropractor sessions have been on average every 2.5 weeks when it used to be 4-5 weeks instead. Something is obviously not working so I guess I better start working out or something.

Or maybe I could hire Michelle to be my personal trainer to come and wake me up at 6:00 in the morning and REALLY force me to work out. ;) I obviously have no will power to do it on my own even though my gym membership that I am paying EVERY month should have something to do with it!!!!

or just keep doing the stairs. That way you are getting a workout and will quickly be able to see how fast you improve (by measuring which floor you get to before being knackered). I’ve done this as a means of getting /some/ exercise in the past and you’ll be amazed - you’ll be managing an extra floor within the week if you do it daily, I promise.

I get a bit huffed out as well if I am climbing up alot of stairs, just take it easy! as an example maybe you could jog up a flight, breathe, slowly walk up another flight of stairs and so on but if you feel like your body can’t hamdle it right now then don’t over-do it.

Simon, it would help if I was at University every day but I am there 3 times a week. Not surprisingly, my thighs are VERY sore today! lol I think I got a wham bam and slam kind of workout yesterday-short but sweet, yet it worked the muscles so that is good!!
